Maruha Nichiro-backed Austral Fisheries, one of Australia’s largest fishing companies, said it is commissioning construction of a deep-sea longlining vessel to be named Austral Odyssey.

The new vessel, one of the largest and most technologically advanced of its kind, is being designed by Marin Teknikk and will be built by the Baatbyg shipyard in Norway.

The trawler is expected to be delivered near the end of 2025.

Japanese seafood giant Maruha Nichiro owns a 50 percent stake in Austral Fisheries, which it bought from Spain's Pescanova in 2013.
