The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) said Wednesday part of the outside waters will open for the shrimp season on May 1.

"Trawl samples taken by LDWF biologists indicate white shrimp in the area have reached marketable sizes, and the closure is no longer necessary," said LDWF.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission will decide opening dates for the 2017 spring inshore shrimp season at the May 4 meeting.
