Bering Sea snow crab quota cut 12%

To protect the Pribilof blue king crab stock, the Bering Sea snow crab fishery will not open in certain areas.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) said Thursday the 2017-18 Bering Sea snow crab fishery will open Oct. 15 with a quota of 18.96 million pounds, 12 percent less than last year's quota.

Of this total, 17.1 million pounds is for the IFQ fleet and 1.9 million for the CDQ fleet.
