ICES proposes 15% hike in Barents Sea saithe quota

Norwegian, Russian vessels could be allowed to fish up to 172,500 tons of saithe next year.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is recommending a total allowable catch (TAC) of 172,500 metric tons for saithe in the Barents Sea for 2018.

This is up 15 percent from the quota of 150,000 metric tons in the current year for Norwegian and Russian vessels.

Bycatch of coastal cod and golden redfish in fisheries targeting saithe in subareas 1 and 2 should be kept as low as possible, ICES said.

Scientists also gave their recommendations for Barents Sea cod and haddock TACs Tuesday, proposing a 20 and 13.2 percent cut, respectively.
