Spanish whitefish fleet nabs eco-label stamp

The longliners operate in the North East Atlantic.

Eight commercial fishing vessels of the Galician ship owners association of Puerto de Celeiro achieved sustainable seafood certification from Friend of the Sea (FoS), the group said Thursday.

The longliners fish hake in the North East Atlantic, mostly at night, at a depth between 300 and 500 meters to minimize the risk of interaction with seabirds.

In addition, the vessels use specialized fishing gear called "tori lines" to prevent seabirds bycatch. Accidental fish bycatch is also minimal.

“We are very proud to have achieved the Friend of the Sea certification,” said Eduardo Miguez Lopez, director of Puerto de Celeiro.

“Our plan is to have the whole fleet audited for Friend of the Sea certification in the coming years.”
