Brussels show preview: Gearing up for the world's biggest seafood event

We're less than a week away from the the world's biggest seafood show. Check out what's coming up.

The 25th edition of the Seafood Expo Global in Brussels, Belgium, begins next week. The industry is gearing up with new announcements, product debuts and events.

According to the show's organizers, this year’s event will be the largest ever in terms of exhibit space. More than 1,800 exhibiting companies from 79 countries will be displaying their seafood products, services and equipment in more than 38,350 square meters of space.

Following a record year for exports, Scottish seafood is set to make a splash this week at Seafood Expo Global, with a total of 46 companies heading to the show.

The delegation heading across the channel this year has grown by around 40 percent compared to 2016, on the back of the success of last year’s event, where numerous deals were signed over the three days.

Loch Fyne, for instance, plans to debut its recently launched Makar Gin Infused Smoked Salmon on the global market.

The Scottish seafood sector has just returned from a successful visit to Boston in March, where opportunities to sell more Scottish seafood into the competitive US market were secured, and deals done for several delegates at the Seafood Expo North America.

These activities have contributed towards a record year for Scottish seafood exports which are at a new high of £5.5 billion (€6.5 billion/$7 billion) -- a rise from 2015 of 8 percent and up 55 percent since 2007.

Finnish salmon and trout processor Hätälä Oy will present its range of products for export markets at the show in Brussels, after recently nabbing BRC AA rating.

The products includeflamed salmon and rainbow trout, as well as other ready-to-eat fish products such as fish burgers.

Anova Seafood launches a new chilled counter at the Seafood Expo Global in Brussels.

The range characterizes itself through premium products, that are available year round.

The products are brought to the market via a short, controlled and transparent supply chain.

“We see consumer demand increasing for products with a transparent and simple supply chain," said Arjan Oosterlee, commercial director at Anova Seafood.

"We simply want to eat good food and know where our products are from," he said. “This range answers to the consumers’ needs.”

Prodemar, the turbot and sole brand of Stolt Sea Farm, will be launching its new King sole in Brussels.

The company, which is owned by Stolt-Nielsen, said it is the "largest sole in aquaculture."

King sole will be introduced at the company's booth in hall 6, #1363 on Tuesday, April 25, with a tasting session.

Chilean farmer Camanchaca and Spanish processor Krustagroup signed a new commercial agreement for the distribution of the former's products in Spain, Italy and Portugal under Krustagroup's sales arm.

Icelandic Group, which recently sold its Belgian subsidiary Gadus, said it will be in "full force" at the Brussels show.

The Icelandic brand and operations directors and teams will be on hand, as will its Chairman of the Board Herdís Drofn Fjeldsted. 

Additionally, customers will have the opportunity to talk with key representatives from Icelandic Iberica, Icelandic Seachill, The Saucy Fish Co., who are showcasing their frozen range this year, Icelandic Gadus, and Icelandic Asia.

The group will be exhibiting in hall 6, booth #6-943.

The Argentinian pavilion at booth #P-4519 will boast a group of companies at this year's event, promoting Argentine red shrimp.

Last year, the country's red shrimp industry set a record with more than $1 billion (€936.3 million) in turnover and 160,000 metric tons exported to almost 90 markets including Spain, Italy, the United States and China.

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA) will attend the 25th edition of the Brussels show to promote Spanish seafood under the slogan, "Discover our fisheries, competitive and sustainable."

Twenty-two Spanish companies will come to the show with MAPAMA and exhibit together at the pavilion, located in hall 7. 

The National Association of manufacturers of canned fish and seafood (ANFACO-CECOPESCA), the Spanish Association of wholesalers, importers, transformers and exporters of products of fishing and aquaculture (CONXEMAR) and the Business Association of producers of marine cultures of Spain (APROMAR) will be present.

GlobalGAP is holding a news conference on Wednesday, April 26, to give an update on its GGN certification, reporting on its "first experiences from increased transparency of aquaculture sources and production systems."

Panelists include Kristian Moeller, chief executive officer of GlobalGAP, Craig Anderson, CEO of The Scottish Salmon Company, and Jürgen Pauly, category manager fish at Globus Group.

The event will take place in Hall 11, third floor, room 1123.

Ecuador's shrimp producers will be hitting the show in full force, and continue their 'First Class Shrimp Seafood Tour.'

The National Chamber of Aquaculture of Ecuador invites show participants to meet Docapes, Edpacif, Expalsa, Langosmar Organic, Negocios Industriales Real, Omarsa, Promarosa, Quirola Group and Sociedad Nacional de Galápagos (Songa) at booths #6-959 and #6-1068.

Costco salmon supplier Foppen will start its cooperation with former Marine Harvest and Klaas Puul exec Maiko van der Meer at the Brussels show.

It hopes to conquer the UK and southern European markets with a range of "high-end" products and concepts.

Canada's Clearwater Seafoods is launching natural, wild-caught Arctic surfclams in pre-cut and portioned sushi-ready slices to the European marketplace.

The company will showcase the ready-to-use clam format in Brussels at booth #P-4419.

Russian pollock suppliers are planning a major expansion into the EU pollock market. As part of this effort, Rosrybolovstvo is doubling the number of participants at the upcoming Brussels Seafood Expo to 22 companies.

"The leading Russian exporters involved in fishing and fish processing will be represented at the Russian pavillion," Olga Shchedrova, a spokesperson for Rosrybolovstvo, told IntraFish.

Among them will be Ocean Trawlers, Nakhodka Active Marine Fishery Base, Russian Fishery Company, Preobrazhenskaya Base of Trawling Fleet and Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) are organizing a Seafood Futures Forum on April 26, exploring the "power of partnership and how certification is transforming the seafood market." 

The event will include a keynote presentation from Lidl International and a panel discussion with industry leaders Mars Petcare, Simplot, Sanford, followfish and Aqua Spark.

Emiko Terazono, commodities correspondent at the Financial Times, will moderate the discussion.

Royal Greenland is planning to present a number of "special, innovative seafood concepts" as well as its core North Atlantic species at the upcoming Brussels show.

It will present its Nutaaq cod range, which is caught and processed locally in Maniitsoq, Greenland.

In addition, Royal Greenland will also display its new range of Gourmet sliced smoked cod and salmon, its zip-lock packaging for convenient re-sealing, and its glutenfree and organic breading for the convenience segment.

Florida-based Sea Delight will feature celebrity Chef Robyn Almodovar as its Chef Ambassador to showcases its seafood products in Brussels.

Almodovar will be "creating culinary masterpieces" at the expo using tuna, swordfish, hamachi, mahi-mahi, octopus, and smoked salmon, the company said.

Expo attendees can meet Almodovar and taste her culinary creations at the Sea Delight booth #8-4539.

Pescaviar, a Spanish foodservice supplier specializing in the production and commercialization of premium products, continues to pursue its presence in international markets, and will attend this year's event in Brussels.

The company will showcase its specialties in seafood products, such as MSC-certified Arënkha herring pearls, a seafood delicacy it calls "a perfect alternative to caviar."

Visitors can also try the company's fish creams.

Pescaviar exports products to more than 30 countries. It will be exhibiting in hall 5, booth #749.
