The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is diving deeper into the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) business, a sign, I believe, the eco-label pioneer’s current business model -- up until now focused on larger, developed fisheries -- may be out of gas.

In June, the MSC board agreed to “further develop” a new program to recognize fisheries that are committed to making improvements towards full assessment and MSC certification, so-called “In Transition to MSC" (ITM) fisheries.

FIPs, as these fisheries are better known, began attracting MSC attention in 2012, but the board push in June has undoubtedly elevated the issue up the priority list.
