SCHERING-PLOUGH Animal Health Corporation has launched the world's first oral vaccine - AquaVac Vibromax - to protect shrimp against the most prevalent and damaging species of vibrio bacteria.

The vaccine contains inactivated cultures of the leading vibrio pathogens, including luminescent vibrio, which are blended into a novel delivery system called an antigen protection vehicle (APV).

"Exhaustive selection of pathogenic strains from several countries, plus the product's novel formulation characteristics, ensures that AquaVac Vibromax provides maximum immune system stimulation and optimal protection against a variety of pathogenic vibrio species, " said Dr Patrick Smith, Schering-Plough's aquaculture director of R&D and product development.
