SCIENTISTS at the Institute for Experimental Pathology, part of the University of Iceland at Keldur, are addressing health issues related to 'new' coldwater marine species such as Atlantic cod, halibut and haddock.

As this sector develops, research is needed to determine such species' susceptibility to disease, particularly during the early stages of growth, when mortality rates are high and bacterial infection is a likely cause.

Three specialists - Bjarnheidur Gudmundsdottir, Sigridur Gudmundsdottir and Bergljot Magnadottir - began working on infectious disease in coldwater species in 1999.
