Huon gets green light to explore oceanic salmon farming

'The future growth of the industry would be mainly oceanic,' says minister.

The Tasmanian government granted an environmental monitoring permit to Huon Aquaculture to explore the potential for oceanic salmon farming on the east coast of South Bruny Island, reports The Mercury.

The exploration, including an area that stretches over 6 kilometers off the coast of South Bruny Island, reflects pans for future “grow zones” will mainly oceanic, rather than estuarine, according to Jeremy Rockliff, Tasmanian minister of primary industries and water.

“This is all about getting the balance right and the plan relates to all aspects of the industry from hatchery to harvest, research and development, skills and also future planning.”
