Salmones Austral seeks approval on Magallanes farming project
The company presented a project to farm an additional 5,000 metric tons a year in the region.
Chilean salmon farmer Salmones Austral submitted a declaration of environmental impact (DIA) to the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic service of environmental evaluation seeking approval for a new salmon project in the region.
The company, which already operates in Magallanes, presented a project valued at $2.5 million (€2.17 million), for the construction of a farming site with an annual capacity of 5,000 metric tons a year.
If approved, the site will have 24 square cages of 30 meters x 30 meters with a depth of 17 meters.
The company said it would stock smolts of 120 grams, and will produce salmon in cycles of 23 months.
