Australian start-up dives into Murray cod farming

Demand ramped up after fish neared endangered species list.

Australian aquaculture company Murray Cod Australia started farming Murray cod to meet market demand in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth after the species became sparse in eastern Australian waterways according to North Queensland Register.

On restaurant menus, it sells for more than AUD$50 ($37.9/€35.7) each and costs about AUD$33 ($25/€23.6) per kilogram at fishmongers. Asia is growing as a market for this fish as well, according to the news site.

The company plans to hit a production of 300 metric tons by  2018-19, up from 20 metric tons a year ago and it hopes to sell 1,000 metric tons by 2021.
