Chilean authorities set out new changes to salmon farming

Producers are given until June 2018 to apply them.
Chile’s National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca), and the country’s Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) gathered with industry representatives to explain proposed rule changes to current aquaculture processes.
Under the new regulations -- which are to be implemented by companies by June 1, 2018 -- farmers will not be allowed to move their production at all, as opposed to the current regulation, which allows a displacement of 50 meters within farming sites.
Companies will have to comply with the new regulations, and apply criteria and standards to measure the position of each of their farming concessions.
Fish producers were asked to enforce the legislation proposed by Subpesca and Sernapesca, and act “in good faith” respecting audit guidelines.
"During the environmental impact assessment, Subpesca will verify the location of the farming pens," said Eugenio Zamorano, chief of aquaculture of Subpesca.
"In the case of non-compliance, offenders will be reported and Sernapesca will open an investigation on the illegality of farming outside the concession."
