Algae salmon mortalities in Chile reach 170,000

Sernapesca said this year's conditions are similar to those seen in 2016.

New figures from Chile’s National Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca) put the number of salmon mortalities caused by the new algal bloom at 170,000 fish, reports Reuters.

Sernapesca said weather conditions this year are very similar to last year’s – too much sunlight, high temperatures and little rain.

The algal bloom which occurred last year killed 20 percent of Chile’s salmon production.
